After a very rainy Saturday kept us inside all day, we got out on Sunday to visit Fredericksborg Castle in Hillerød, a city about 30 minutes north of us by train. This castle was built by Christian IV in the early 1600's. It was nearly destroyed by a fire in 1859 and rebuilt to what it looks like today. Fredericksborg Castle now houses the Danish Museum of National History.
We must admit that we are suffering from a touch of castle overdose. Nearly all castles we have visited in the area were built by the same man - Christian IV - and therefore look a lot alike. They are all starting to blend together in our minds. But what set this one apart from the others was the Castle Garden.
This Baroque Garden is very grand in size. It has ornate hedges, geometric topiaries, fountains, ponds and a stream, all perfectly manicured and vibrantly green. I can't imagine the work it takes to keep this garden looking like it does!
