A Trip to Helsingør (Elsinore)

This morning we rode the train to Helsingør,  a small town an hours ride north of Copenhagen.  We toured Kronborg Castle, which dates back to the 15th century and was the setting of Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'.  The highlight of the castle was the Casements, or in Amy's terms: the scary dark dungeon.  (Seriously, it's very creepy down there.)  The only light was from little candles or gas lamps every so often.  We had to use a flashlight to navigate our way through the dark and cramped tunnels.  Also in the Casements was a statue of Holger Danske, a Danish legendary hero who sleeps beneath the castle and who will awaken to save the country when it is in need.

After visiting the castle we toured around the streets of Helsingør, which are also full of history with narrow cobblestone streets only wide enough for walking and many old, timbered buildings.  We had danishes (the pastry) at an old bakery there.

When we returned to Copenhagen we had to move to a new hotel because of a mix-up (on their end) with the people at DTU about where we were staying.  It all worked out fine, and we're now staying in a more residential part of town.  (The other hotel was very close to the Tivoli amusement park and the whole area was much more crowded.)  This evening we toured our new neighborhood a little bit to see where things are at.

My course starts tomorrow evening, but before that we're planning to see where our apartment is and what Lyngby (the town we'll be in) is like. But right now we're really tired, so it's off to bed for us.
