Frederiksberg Garden

Today we met a friend of Amy's from the international school, Tamara, for a tour of Frederiksberg Garden in Copenhagen. We had not been to this part of the city yet so were excited to see a new place. The garden is quite big and has many wandering trails with many trees as well as many open grass areas.

There was one tree in particular that Tamara wanted us to see: the Suttetræ (Pacifier Tree):

It is a tradition for some kids reaching age 3 to give up their pacifiers and take them to this tree to take care of them. It becomes a big celebration of the children getting older and moving on to school and not needing their pacifiers any more. There were many bundles of pacifiers and many notes from the children to the tree.

After seeing the Suttetræ we headed over to the edge of the Copenhagen Zoo, where we could watch the elephants at play from outside the fence. The elephant grounds had some tall wooden pillars and sand and a little pond with ducks and herons. There was a young elephant that was very active and fun to watch, whether it was swimming in the water or chasing the ducks around on land.

The bigger elephants spent their time dusting themselves to stay cool.

It was fun to see some live elephants again. (When we were in Chicago the Lincoln Park Zoo had to get rid of their elephants due to illness.) It was also fun to see a new beautiful park and spend the day outside. Oliver slept for the majority of the trip, but did wake up to see the elephants. You can see more pictures on our gallery.
