This afternoon Oliver and I took a trip to Wagner Farm, a real working dairy farm operating right in the middle of suburbia. It's in Glenview - about a 15-minute drive from our apartment. It's actually part of the Glenview Park Department, intended as a place of farming preservation and education. We've often driven past and admired the cows grazing out in the fields with the crowded urban neighborhood in the background. Today we stopped in and got up close and personal with the farm animals.
Oliver's favorite animals there, by far, were the pigs. All of their grunting and snorting gave him the giggles. When we got home and looked at the pictures he got his grunt going too. 
Ollie and Mr. Goose had quite the stare-off. That goose stood as still as a statue and Oliver just kept watching it. This coop was also full of chickens, and their quick movements were entertaining for Oliver. I never realized, though, how much chickens smell (and not in a good way). The smell of the cow barn was a welcome odor compared to that of the chickens. That may have been the deal-breaker in my dream of someday owning a house where I could have chickens running around in the backyard.
The cows were very friendly and loved to give big licks. Every day at 4:30 you can go and watch a milking demonstration. We didn't do that today, but I think we will try to do that sometime. This is a great place to take kids to help them gain an appreciation for where their food comes from. And best of all, it's free!
